Your apprenticeship includes many moving parts, and it can be challenging to keep everything organized. The Apprentice Section is here to support you by answering questions and providing helpful resources to guide you through your journey with Utah Electrical Training Alliance.

General Information

Inside Wireman Tool List

Electricians will furnish themselves with the following tools as per the Labor Agreement:

  1. Knife **
  2. Hacksaw Frame **
  3. Pencil **
  4. Hammer **
  5. Flashlight (no batteries supplied by contractors) **
  6. Center Punch **
  7. Appropriate Measuring Tape **
  8. Small Level
  9. Screw Drivers (as necessary)
  10. Keyhole Saw Handle
  11. Allen Wrenches to 3/8”
  12. Small Wire Stripper
  13. Chalk Line
  14. Crescent Wrench (8” or less)
  15. Small Crimping Tool
  16. Chain Tong or Pipe Wrench (14” or less)
  17. 600-volt tester
  18. l/4” Tap Handle
  19. Nut Drivers 3/16” to 5/8”
  20. End Wrenches up to 3/4”
  21. 3/8” Socket Set up to 3/4”

When you begin work, you must have all tools marked with an asterisk (*) on the required tool list. These are essential for starting your apprenticeship.

The remaining tools should be accumulated gradually over your first year.
complete toolbox is required by the start of your second year of school.

I have received a termination or Reduction of force slip from my contractor. What now?

If you receive a slip, please contact the Utah Electrical Training Alliance as soon as possible.
If the slip arrives on a Friday, be sure to call first thing on Monday morning and speak directly with someone in the office.

How do I change my contact information?

If you need to update your contact details or other personal information, please call the Utah Electrical Training Alliance or visit the office in person.

We’ll have you complete a Change of Information Form to ensure your records are current.

Who should I contact if I’m having jobsite concerns?

If you encounter any concerns or issues on the job site, please report them to the Training Director or Assistant Training Director as soon as possible.

Can I request a specific day of school?

Not typically, class schedules are set in advance by semester.

I am struggling financially to pay books and tuition. What can I do?

You may be eligible to apply for the Department of Workforce Services (DWS) grant to support your apprenticeship.

What do I do if I miss class?

If you miss a class, you’ll need to speak with your Instructor to arrange a makeup plan.

If your absence affects your progress or attendance requirements, you may be referred to the Assistant Training Director or Training Director for further guidance and support.

How do I get my job assignment?

The UETA will send out a training assignment via email to you, your contractor and the IBEW.

After receiving the training assignment, you’ll need to go to the IBEW hall to pick up your dispatch.

Apprentices are required to accept any job they are dispatched to—refusal is not permitted.

When do I receive a raise?

Before your raise can be processed, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Monthly Work Reports – All reports must be submitted on time.
  2. Class Attendance – No unexcused absences, or all missed classes must be properly made up.
  3. Academic Performance – A minimum GPA of 75% must be maintained.
  4. Disciplinary Status – No pending disciplinary actions by the committee.

What if I need time off from work or school?

  • Time off from work for personal or medical reasons, less than two weeks can be arranged directly with your contractor.
  • For time off from work and/or school for longer than two weeks, you must request a Leave of Absence from the UETA Committee.
  • The leave request must be reviewed and approved by the Apprenticeship Committee at their monthly meeting.
    Please contact the UETA office for guidance on how to proceed with your request.

When are timesheets due?

Timesheets must be submitted by the 10th of each month.

All timesheets are submitted online using your JATC Trade School account login.

It is strongly recommended that you keep a hard copy of each timesheet in the booklet provided during Orientation. This helps maintain accurate records of your monthly hours.

Do I need to submit a timesheet if I’m not working?

Yes, please remember that a timesheet must be submitted each month.
If you are laid off or on a leave of absence, you are still required to submit a timesheet indicating zero hours worked.

I have enough hours to take my journey test, what do I do?

Once you’ve completed the required on-the-job training hours and classroom instruction for the registered apprenticeship program, you’ll be eligible to schedule your state licensing exams online through ProV.

This process will also be reviewed and discussed during class.
